I see they have a "layout" for the proposed F1 track in Texas.

I guess my question would be.....this thing will cost a ton of money and is there enough F1 support in the U.S. for this thing to pay off?

I'm amazed.
Got home Sunday afternoon and got my remote in hand. The Mrs. says that is dangerous.

Anyway...went to #150 (Speed) and boom...two cars running side by side...I think a Porsche and a Vette. Finally the Porsche passed. About that time two gigantic "go-karts" blew by them.

Honestly, I tried watching for about 10 minutes and gave up. It wasn't so much the right turns the cars were making but the two classes of cars on the track at the same time and I never could figure out who was doing what.

Hope you had a good weekend.

leon

P.S.
Adjustable Body Work

 From the FIA 2011 regulations:

<begin quote>Driver adjustable bodywork From 2011, adjustable bodywork may be activated by the driver at any time prior to the start of the race and, for the sole purpose of improving overtaking opportunities during the race, after the driver has completed two laps. The driver may only activate the adjustable bodywork in the race when he has been notified via the control electronics that it is enabled. It will only be enabled if the driver is less than one second behind another at any of the pre-determined positions around each circuit. The system will be disabled the first time the driver uses the brakes after the system has been activated. The FIA may, after consulting all the competitors, adjust the time proximity in order to ensure the purpose of the adjustable bodywork is met.</end quote>

A lot of competitors (notably Mark Webber) have been complaining. As one Internet poster put it, "overtaking is an art, not a right," and I have to agree. The glory of Formula 1 is that it's not easy to overtake. Can that make it boring to the casual viewer? Sure, but it never was the spirit of F1 to be "entertaining" in the lowest, simplest form of entertainment. Innovation, technology, strategy...that's F1. And when the overtakes do happen (which has been quite a lot in 2010), they're spectacular, because you know just how much effort and skill went into them. I'd rather see a race with a handful of quality overtakes than hundreds of free passes.

I'm definitely disappointed to see the FIA trying to "dumb" the sport down and manufacture excitement that isn't exciting at all.

Besides, will this even work as intended? I imagine the trailing driver will adjust his wing and the driver in front will just hit the KERS (which will return in 2011) negating the adjustment.

I'd much rather the wing adjustments be controlled by the driver when the driver wants/needs to do so; it puts more strategy into play and keeps overtaking pure and legitimate.

Kubica to Mercedes?

 Latest rumors

Interesting if true. Kubica has easily been one of the top drivers of the season, taking his Renault to heights even Alonso would have struggled to reach. He has so much motivation and is a true racer. I'd love to see him get a shot at Mercedes, a team that can be winners but just don't have a number one driver right now with an aging Schumacher and a Massa-esque Rosberg.

I do think it's worth exploring options beyond Michael for them, too. At this point in the season, he should at least be showing improvement, yet he seems to be going backwards instead. It's a shame to see a legend return for more only to find he's lost it, but that's how it goes. I'd love to see Kubica in a top-flight ride scrapping with Hamilton, Vettel, Button, Alonso, Webber, etc.

Turkey Race

For those of you who went for the three full meals of racing. Breakfast in Turkey didn't disappoint.

I thought the McLarens would have been shut out as Vettel grabbed second at the first corner, but Hamilton came back and was a solid 2nd at the end of the lap.
Then Hamilton had the long pit stop. It still amuses me how these guys can F-Up a stop. Fercrissakes, the guy only has to remove and replace 1 nut in 5 seconds. It's not like he's doing 10 on each side of the car.

So again I thought Red Bull had the 1-2 covered. Then they got bunched up because of yellow flags and fuel strategy. Vettel gets a run on Webber, who'd led the first 40+ laps, and then decides he needs a better line to make the corner and turn right into Webber.

Result: Vettel out and POed at Webber. Webber back in 3rd.

Then the McLarens go for a repeat performance. Although they did touch, neither car was damaged and by all appearances, Button was told to cool it.

I'll admit that I'm no Hamilton fan. I blame the other Hamilton fans, the BBC and EuroSport for praising him as the second coming. I actually like Vettel, and so I was very disappointed in the crash and his failure to own-up to the mistake. Oooo, I bet Red Bull's team meeting was interesting today. I don't remember teammates taking each other out since Montoya and Ralf Schumacher - at Indy I believe.

Who the H would invest more money? tony George, nope, he's almost broke himself according to a Speed report by Robin Miller. This is laughable.
Anyone Catch Bernies Latest Off-The-Wall Proposal?

I'm not sure if this is an attempt at humor by Bernie, of if he truly is serious, but he has proposed that due to the lack of overtaking in F1 that perhaps shortcuts could be implemented.

Yeah, right this sounds like a winner.
This would require the redesign of all track on the circuit. Some are flexible enough in design that they could simply use a different configuration. It wouldn't as easy as simply allowing a driver to drive straight through a chicain though. Like emerging from the pit lane, it would have to be controlled for safety. What would they do at Monaco or Singapore, cut through a parking lot.
Bernie really should give interviews when he is off his meds.
Or is he pulling our legs?

Bernie Proposes Shortcuts

He will partner with Nico Rosberg for an all German team. I guess this offsets the all British team of McLaren.
He will turn 41 in January. I don't think he's too old yet.
Nigel Mansel won the championship at 39, and I think Schumi has a few wins left in the tank.
He retired with 91 wins; if this years is successful I think he'll stay around for another year and try to make it an even 100.
I was never a fan, but the man could drive that's without question.
An employee of the German firm Henkle (makers of Unibond and loctite) without any authority and motivated by personal gains signed a $43 millon per year for three years sponsorship deal with Brawn before the Mercedes buy-out.
Apparently Mercedes is not planning to spend nearly as much this time around so Brawn having major outside sponsorship already inplace was part of the deal.

Now it turns out Henkle is taking Brawn to court to assure no liability for the sponsorship.

The money involved in F1 is just staggering. $43 mill per year as a secondary sponsor. Any surprise Toyota, Honda and BMW dropped out?

Here's the link to an Autoweek article.

But not his only chump move
Remember his move on Villeneuve in Jerez 1997?

“What would I change in my career? I have some moments that if I could have them again, yes I would do them differently – probably 1997 at Jerez. I would have had a couple of opportunities to avoid all this and still win the championship, but you take your lessons and you learn from them,”

I'm not sure how to read that. Are the regrets for his attempt to take Villeneuve out or does he regret that his actions took himself out?

Oh, and apparently no regrets taking out Hill, because that seemed to workout just fine.

Oh, and don't forget the time he parked it just past the finish line during the final minutes of Monoco qualifying.

A great driver, but for moves like these I didn't like him.
The Formula One car that Michael Schumacher drove to 1994 World Championship glory is going under the hammer on auction website Ebay.

Bidding has currently reached 1,600,000 euros (£1.5 million) for the Benetton B194, equipped with a Ford-Cosworth V8 engine.

Schumacher used the car to record his first F1 championship as he famously - and ruthlessly - crashed into Damon Hill at the season-ending Australian Grand Prix. Both drivers were forced to retire, handing the German the title by a single point.

The seller, who is based in Toronto describes the car as being in "racing condition" and full 1994 season livery.

You seem to have the "pulse" on a lot of "stuff" on F1.
With Toyota pulling out do you think they will invest more in FRANCECAR or is there some "internal" reason they are jumping the F1 ship?
thanx,
leon

I have not read anything stating where they were going to refocus their funds.
They are having a lot more success in NASCAR than they ever had in F1 at a fraction of the cost.
Their annual budget was rumored to be in the $300 Million range.

I'm waiting for the first Japanese driver to show up in NASCAR. That could be their next investment. That's how drivers like Sato and Nakagima got their rides.

With Bridgestone leaving at the end of 2010 there will be no Japanese presence in F1. Funny, two years ago they had three teams and the tires.

Renault had a board meeting the other day to discuss their withdrawl. What gets me is that Toyota, BWM and Renault were three of the most vocal in resisting Mosley's $40 million cap.
Supposedly that when Brawn bought Honda there were about 750 employees for the team.
Yesterday's race in Abu Dahbi put an end to the season.
Although Button seemed to have an easy time of it wrapping up the title in Brazil, there were doubts. He hadn't had a podium since early June.

The Abu Dhabi track is beautiful, but I thought the racing was a bit tame for the most part. The last few laps Button really put on a good show running down Webber and making a couple of serious challenges. Although he had to settle for third, if he was given a couple more laps, I think he would have made the pass.

I'm officially a Kamui Kobayashi fan. With no time in an actual F1 car, the steps in for the injured Glock in Brazil and finishes a strong 9th. Yesterday using a single stop

I felt bad for Barrichello. I wanted him to win his home race, and have a shot next week. I could not believe the difference between where Rubens and Webber rejoined after their first stops. It was only two additional laps.
Even worse was the puncture that let Hamilton by for third.

The championship is separated by 14 points with two races left. Rubens is on the pole at his home race and Jensen is starting 14th.
Vettel is 16 point back and starting 15th.
The weather has played a part in each practice and qualifying.
Rubens is 6-8 kilos lighter than the others in the top ten, that means he'll have to come in 2-3 laps early.
This is not one to be missed.

If you missed qualifying there was a lot of rain, red flags and drivers getting caught on the wrong tires as time expired.
Trulli To Test For MWR In Florida

 Trulli To Test For MWR
He says he's still committed to F1, but pretty sure he'll be shopping for a ride come the end of the season. Toyota may even leave F1.

"'Last year I had the chance to visit a NASCAR race at Michigan, which was a really interesting experience for me,' he said.
'NASCAR is one of the most significant motorsport series in the world and I was very curious to see the racing first hand.
'At the time I asked the Toyota guys in the U.S. if it would be possible to one day test a car just for fun and before the Belgian Grand Prix they offered me the chance to do so later in the year.'
The 35-year-old Trulli said, however, that the November test at Lakeland in Florida was purely an opportunity to try out another category of motorsport for his own personal pleasure."

Wow! Just listened to the pre-race show in which Peter Windsor explained this whole sorry Renault-wreck deal. Unbelievable. Renault ought to win some kind of life-time achievement award from F1 for their underhandedness. The planning was too much. Had to laugh. Alonso would have won a few points, possibly a 6th place---no better, but to win. They even had Piquet crash in a certain spot on the track where there were no lift-off cranes so the safety car would have to come out, and even timed the accident at a specific lap/time. Has to be one of the all-time greatest cheat frauds in racing. so much so that it is comical. Smart smart guys. Too smart.

Briatore Out!

This whole debacle and the raction by what I guess are mostly British fans cracks me up.
To me Piquet is as guilty as Briatore. Waiting until after one has nothing to lose to do the right thing does not warrent immunity.
I cannot believe that there is any evidence to prosicute. If i was in Briatore's position there would have been two people in on the deal - myself and Piquet. No notes, no plan. Sure it may have sounded a bit odd to order Alonso to be fueld lite and then seen Piquet crash just after Alonso's stop, but there would have been no real proof. It would have been Piquet's word against mine.

To read the Brits comments, one would think that Alonso was the master-mind behind not only this plot by the two previous spying cases.

Wow, I really didn't think they would be so stupid.
Briatore and Pat Symonds are out of Renault and Renault wont contest the charges.
They actually told Piquet to wreck at Singapore last year. UFB!

Here's the transcript although there is nothing clearly indicating that Piquet was told to crash.

Here's the link to the Briatore article

All Hail The Return Of Lotus...Sort Of

Headline at EuroSport.com "Lotus Return to F1 as Sauber Miss Out"

So the greedy SOB's at BMW wanted a fortune from Peter Sauber which I guess he couldn't produce. Now we're losing quite a few jobs here and a stat-of-the-art wind tunnel will be without much use. It might even be closed and sold.

Now the FIA has closed the door on Sauber and granted an entry to Lotus F1. Now, I wouldn't mind so much if it was Lotus, but "'The cars will be made in Malaysia, by Malaysians,' the Malaysian government said."

"Lotus will initially be based in Norfolk, some 10 miles from the original Lotus Cars factory in Eastern England, but the future design, manufacturing and technical centre will be purpose built at Malaysia's Sepang International Circuit."

They should call it Lotus Blossom F1

It was a wild start and some great racing.
Brawn's strategy and Ruben's great driving brought home another win.

Another 0 points for Hamilton. I'm happy he's OK, but I didn't mind seeing him make the mistake on the last lap.
NASCAR Has The Mayfields and F1 Has The Piquets

I guess every sport has it's 'family'.

1) After a year and a half Renault let Piquet (0 points 2009) go after the Hungarian GP

2) A few weeks ago at Spa it was announced that the FIA was investigating an 'older race'.
The older race turned out to be the Singapore GP won by Alonso who had the great fortune of pitting just before the safety car was deployed for a crash. A crash by his teammate Nelson Piquet jr. The conspiracy theorists had Piquet crashing on team orders. It turns out that Nelson's (Sr. & Jr.) grew a conscience since Jr's termination from Renault and blew the whistle on Briatore for race fixing.

3) Today it was announced by Renault that they have begun criminal proceedings against the Piquets alleging that the father and son tried to blackmail Renault to keeping Jr as their driver.

And NASCAR fans thought the Evernham-Mayfield-Crocker mess was bad?
