I have often wondered why it is that the conservatives are called the “right” and the liberals are called the “left.” By chance I stumbled upon this verse in the Bible:

Ecclesiastes 10:2 (NIV)

“The heart of the wise inclines to the right,
but the heart of the fool to the left.”

Yep, that’s it!

It was a tough year, but I made it!!!

But not everyone is as lucky as I am......

The economy is so bad that I got a pre-declined credit card in the mail

I ordered a burger at McDonald's, and the kid behind the counter asked,
"Can you afford fries with that?"

CEO's are now playing miniature golf.

If the bank returns your check marked "Insufficient Funds," you have to call them and ask if they mean you or them.

Hot Wheels and Matchbox stocks are trading higher than GM.

McDonald's is selling the 1/4 'ouncer'.

Parents in Beverly Hills and Malibu are firing their nannies and learning
their children's names.

A truckload of Americans was caught sneaking into Mexico .

Dick Cheney took his stockbroker hunting.

Motel Six won't leave the light on anymore.

The Mafia is laying off judges.

BP Oil laid off 25 Congressmen.

Congress says they are looking into the Bernard Madoff scandal. Oh Great!!
The guy who made $50 Billion disappear is being investigated by the people
who made $1.5 Trillion disappear!

And, finally...
I was so depressed last night thinking about the economy, wars, jobs, my
savings, Social Security, retirement funds, and our bleak future, that I
called the Suicide Lifeline and was connected to a call center in Pakistan
. When I told them I was suicidal, they got all excited, and asked if I
could drive a truck.

PICS of Nor'Easter Trek; planning next road trips

Tough for me to believe that my awesome 2010 road trip...
http://community.motorracingne...d=141252&enterthread=y
...is done. If I could be on the road 24/7/365, I would jump on that chance/opportunity in a heartbeat!

In the meantime, it is time to start planning my 2011 road trip, most-likely via US Route 66 and into the northwest United States (Oregon, Washington, the Dakotas, Minnesota, etc.).

I'm also considering a couple mini road trips yet in 2010, in mid September (place TBD) and in November, during Thanksgiving weekend, to TN.

As for my Nor'Easter Trek road trip, I had a GREAT time traveling through IL, IN, MI, OH, PA, NY, MA, NH, MA, CT, NY, NJ, PA, DE, MD, VA, PA, OH, IN, and IL, from Wednesday, August 4 to Sunday, August 15, 2010, meeting up with wonderful people along the way. I took over 400 pics and have them all available, with captions, of course.

MANY THANKS to those with whom I stayed:

Paul/Sabrina (Monte Carlo groups) ... Warren (Detroit) MI
Keith (college) ... Smithville (Canton/Akron) OH
Jan (Adult Congenital Heart Association) ... Randolph (Boston) MA
Ron/Jen (MC groups) ... Spencer (Boston) MA
Jim/Karen (MC groups) ... Telford (Philadelphia) PA
Warren/Nancy (family) ... Falls Church (Alexandria/Washington DC) VA
Heather (best friend) ... Bridgewater (Harrisonburg) VA
Drew (Cheers&Gears) ... Forest Hills (Pittsburgh) PA

HIGHLIGHTS

* The picture captions have details of my trip (including routes driven)...during which I drove some 3,250 miles.

* I had an issue with my camera focusing. Frustratingly, several pics were way too out of focus to keep; however, I opted to keep some "out of focus" pictures.

* The start of my trip (Wednesday, August 4) was delayed by a couple hours due to a nail in the tire of my rental 2010 Dodge Charger SXT.

* My visit to the oldest Major League ballpark (Fenway Park, Boston MA) came on the night of the anniversary of the first night game (08/08/1988) at the second oldest ballbark, Chicago's Wrigley Field.

* Jan of the Adult Congenital Heart Association has a house in Randolph MA that is nearly identical to the house of a relative, Barb, in Hollsopple PA. When I entered Jan's house, I told her where rooms were, without even seeing the house! Yes, I took pictures of BOTH houses during this trip.

* I was able to travel some stretches of famous 2-lane roads along the way, including US Route 6, US Route 20, and US Route 30/The Lincoln Highway, and enjoyed those jaunts very much. My September 2009 trip along US Route 66 (Illinois to California) increased my appreciation for the "old 2 lanes" over the "superslabs". Even so, those "evil superslabs" offer some awesome sights/scenery and a quicker alternative if time is of the essence. For instance, several scenic pictures I took this trip were along "superslabs" and, had I taken portions of US Route 20 and US Route 6 west across Indiana en route home, I would not have made it home in time to drive all of my Monte Carlos that same evening (Sunday, August 15).

* Areas driven through/by:
IN ... Chesterton, Warsaw, Columbia City
MI ... Jackson, Ann Arbor, Warren/Detroit
OH ... Toledo, Sandusky, Medina, Smithville/Akron
PA ... Brookville, Ridgway, Mount Jewett, Mansfield, Sayre
NY ... Vestal, Binghamton, Afton, Cobleskill, Schenectady, Albany
MA ... Springfield, Sturbridge, Worcester/Spencer, Newton, Boston, Randolph
NH ... Derry
CT ... Vernon, Hartford, Newington, Wallingford, Hamden, Trumbull, Norwalk
NY ... White Plains
NJ ... Broomfield, E Brunswick, Trenton
PA ... Levittown, Norristown, Telford, King of Prussia, Philadelphia/Chester
DE ... Wilmington
NJ ... Deepwater
MD ... Carney, Baltimore, Catonsville
VA ... [Washington DC], Alexandria, Falls Church, Leesburg, Marshall, Harrisonburg, Bridgewater, Winchester
WV ... Berkeley Springs
PA ... Breezewood, Somerset, Jerome, Hollsopple, Davidsville, Greensburg, Irwin, Forest Hills, Pittsburgh, Wexford
OH ... Lordstown (OH Turnpike)
IN ... Chesterton (IN Tollway)

PICTURES IN SLIDESHOW PRESENTATION:
http://picasaweb.google.com/kn...ow/5506950928855332690

A COUPLE PICS...

08/05/2010, Thursday, ~11a, Warren MI ...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A foreman hires a very attractive blonde to paint the stripes on a freshly paved road. The requirement was to paint atleast 2 miles per day. On the first day she painted 4 miles. The foreman was impressed. On the second day she painted 2 miles. The foreman was a little disappointed but since the requirement was only 2 miles he was ok with it. On the third day she painted only one mile. Now he was angry and asked her: "Why did you paint 4 miles the first day, 2 miles the second day and only 1 mile the third day?" She said: "I kept getting further from the paint bucket!"

THE DAY IT ALL STARTED

It was March 6, 1836. On that fateful day, Davy Crockett woke up and rose from his bunk on the main floor of the Alamo . He then walked up to the observation post along the west wall of this fort. William B. Travis and Jim Bowie were already there, looking out over the top of the wall. These three great men gazed at the hordes of Mexicans moving steadily toward them. With a puzzled look on his face, Crockett turned to Bowie and said.........

"Jim, are we having some landscaping done today?

I was working for Getty Oil in S. Calif. at the time. I had worked at our lease in Aliso Canyon above the San Fernando Valley that day and had driven back to the Getty office in Long Beach. When I walked in the office my boss told me Elvis had died. I was 33 years old. Now I'm double that.

Eight Spectators Killed

I raced many races in Lucerne Valley in the 60's and 70's and saw many racers hurt, crippled and killed, but never anything as horrific as this. I didn't race trucks, I raced motorcycles. But spectators even then gathered at the bad areas and got too close to the riders.
This was a horrible accident and could have been prevented by standing further back and playing it safe. This accident brought to mind how the Mexican spectators crowd the course during the Baja 500 and 1000.

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/16/us/16offroad.html

Michelle's Road Trip

Sacrifice is something that many Americans are becoming all too familiar with during this economic downturn. It was a key theme in President Obama's inaugural address to the nation, and he's referenced it numerous times when lecturing the country on how to get back on its feet.

But while most of the country is pinching pennies and downsizing summer sojourns - or forgoing them altogether - the Obamas don't seem to be heeding their own advice. While many of us are struggling, the First Lady is spending the next few days in a five-star hotel on the chic Costa del Sol in southern Spain with 40 of her "closest friends." According to CNN, the group is expected to occupy 60 to 70 rooms, more than a third of the lodgings at the 160-room resort. Not exactly what one would call cutting back in troubled times.

Reports are calling the lodgings of Obama's Spanish fiesta, the Hotel Villa Padierna in Marbella, "luxurious," "posh" and "a millionaires' playground." Estimated room rate per night? Up to a staggering $2,500. Method of transportation? Air Force Two.

To be clear, what the Obamas do with their money is one thing; what they do with ours is another. Transporting and housing the estimated 70 Secret Service agents who will flank the material girl will cost the taxpayers a pretty penny.

Perhaps it could be that the Obamas, who seem to fancy themselves more along the lines of international celebrities than actual leaders, espouse a different view of sacrifice. When Michelle Obama accompanied her husband to Copenhagen along with best buddy Oprah Winfrey, she billed the trip - an ultimately unsuccessful bid to bring the Olympics to Chicago - as follows: "As much of a sacrifice as people say this is for me or Oprah or the President to come for these few days, so many of you in this room have been working for years to bring this bid home."

A quick jaunt to Denmark is a sacrifice? What portraits in courage!

The Obama modus operandi is becoming clear. From lavish trips to Spain to reportedly flying Bo, the President's Portuguese water dog, on a separate aircraft to vacation with them in Maine, to a date night in New York City that perhaps cost nearly $100,000, their idea of austerity is really just the lap of luxury, at least for ordinary folks.

Incredibly, the Obamas have long portrayed themselves as precisely such commoners. Just this month, Obama told ABC the First Couple is "not that far removed from what most Americans are going through." And that "it was just a few years ago that we had high credit card balances, we had two kids, thinking about college. We had our own retirement accounts, wondering if we were going to be able to get enough assets in there."

If that's true, why not select a more appropriate destination like the California coast? The scenery is just as gorgeous as that of Spain, and instead of patronizing a foreign country they would be pumping money into an American economy that desperately needs it. Camp David wouldn't exactly be slumming it, either. A long weekend there would really send a message of responsibility, leadership and compassion. For a couple that has sharply criticized former President George W. Bush so widely, they could stand to follow his example for once and select a more low-key locale, as Bush regularly did in his Texas vacations.

Instead, Michelle Obama seems more like a modern-day Marie Antoinette - the French queen who spent extravagantly on clothes and jewels without a thought for her subjects' plight - than an average mother of two. While she's spent her time in the White House telling parents they should relieve their chubby kids' dependency on sugar and stressing the importance of an organic veggie garden, hopping a jet to Europe to meet with Spanish royalty isn't the visual the White House probably wants to project. Perhaps they've forgotten the damning image of John Kerry, on the eve of the 2004 election, windsurfing off the coast of Nantucket?

I don't begrudge anyone rest and relaxation when they work hard. We all need downtime - the First Family included. It's the extravagance of Michelle Obama's trip and glitzy destination contrasted with President Obama's demonization of the rich that smacks of hypocrisy and perpetuates a disconnect between the country and its leaders. Toning down the flash would humanize the Obamas and signify that they sympathize with the setbacks of the people they were elected to serve.

In January, President Obama insisted that "everybody in the country is going to have to sacrifice something, accept change for the greater good. Everybody is going to have to give. Everybody is going to have to have some skin in the game."

If sacrifice is the precursor to change, what will the family that ran on change offer up? Elitist doublespeak won't cut it.

Read more: http://www.nydailynews.com/opi...l?page=1#ixzz0vmSotT6d

Read more: http://www.nydailynews.com/opi...ish.html#ixzz0vmRy0zEW
A Texan is drinking in a Colorado bar when he gets a call on his cell phone.

He orders drinks for everybody in the bar because, he announces his wife has just produced a baby boy weighing 25 pounds.

Nobody can believe that any new baby can weigh in at 25 pounds, but the Texan just shrugs, "That's about average in Texas , folks...like I said - my boy's a typical Texas baby boy."

Two weeks later the Texan returns to the bar. The bartender says, "Say, you're the father of that baby that weighed 25 pounds at birth, aren't you?

Everybody's been making' bets about how big he'd be in two weeks. ....so how much does he weigh now?

"The proud father answers, "Seventeen pounds."

The bartender is puzzled, and concerned. "What happened? He was 25 pounds the day he was born."

The Texas father takes a slow swig from his beer, wipes his lips on his shirt sleeve, leans into the bartender and proudly says, "Had him circumcised".

God Bless Texas !!!

If you've ever worked for a boss that reacts before getting the facts and thinking things through, you will love this story.....

Arcelor-Mittal Steel, feeling it was time for a shake-up, hired a new CEO and he was determined to rid the company of all slackers.

On a tour of the facilities, the new CEO noticed a guy leaning against a wall. The room was full of workers and he wanted to let them know that he meant business. He walked up to the guy at the wall and asked, 'How much money do you make a week?'

A little surprised, the young man looked at him and replied, 'I make about $400 a week. Why?'

The CEO then handed the guy $1,600 in cash and screamed, 'Here's four weeks' pay, now GET OUT and don't come back!' The guy left without saying a word to the CEO.

Feeling pretty good about himself, the CEO looked around the room and asked, 'Does anyone want to tell me what that goof-ball did here?
Road Ahead ... Perspectives

In September 2009, I road tripped along the Illinois portion of the Lincoln Highway and Route 66 from Illinois to California. That trip increased my awareness of "old routes" in general, including others like the Dixie Highway and US Route 6. Last year's journey also increased my awareness of the "road ahead". Whether the road is "less traveled" or filled with traffic, looking ahead is most-often fun, in more ways than one.

Around the Elgin area, I "exercise" my Monte Carlos on the same "old" roads west of Elgin, including US Route 20:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Route_20
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Route_20_in_Illinois

Some of those roads, particularly US Route 20, are different roads in different places. In this shot west of Starks IL, US Route 20 is a "rural" road:

Meanwhile, in Elgin, US Route 20 is a 4-lane bypass highway...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elgin_Bypass

...as evidenced in this shot heading east in Elgin:

Beyond that line of trees on the right hand side is the Elgin Softball Complex where my bro-in-law's Tuesday team and my Dad's Friday team play.

Starting in 2008, I've researched new "routes"...or variations of paths I've taken before. The more I've driven the same roads, the more I actually NOTICE, including how...
...different things are spotted when traveling one direction on a road vs. the other direction on the same road [the crest of a hill in one direction might reveal a spectacular site (especially at sunset or sunrise), while the crest of that same hill going the other direction may only reveal a dilapidated old barn hidden among a grove of trees]
(and)
...routes interconnect/intersect with others, such as IL RT 47 crossing several major cross-country routes, including US Route 20, The Lincoln Highway, US Route 6 and famed US Route 66.

Thus, this year (2010), I started taking pics of the "road ahead" around here, similar to what I took along Route 66, except in some cases I added the element of "perspective". I took one pic in each direction, showing how the pathway looks different going one way versus traveling the other. Three examples....

#1 ...
Gun Control Doesn't Work

If firearms were indeed as inherently dangerous as gun control advocates suggest, there should be millions of crimes, murders, suicides, and accidents involving firearms each year, and those numbers should be escalating since the total number of firearms and firearms owners have risen substantially over the past few years.

In reality, numbers of firearms related crime and accidents have steadily dropped while gun sales have gone through the roof and more states have liberalized laws dealing with the carry of arms in public. Independent, peer reviewed studies show that firearms are used 5 times more often to stop crime than to commit crime – and that doesn't count police use or the deterrent factor of criminals knowing their intended victims might be armed. Guns are used by private citizens to stop criminal activity some 2.5 million times each year and rarely do they even fire a shot doing it. Recreational shooters fire billions of rounds each year, but firearms injury accident numbers keep going down and are at record lows.

Gun control laws only impact those who obey them – the law-abiding. There is no logic – or evidence – to support restrictions on the good guys.

In the early 1970's, when Neal Knox was editor and publisher of Rifle and Handloader magazines, he created a bumper sticker that posed the question, "Where Has a Gun Law Reduced Crime?" He knew that the answer to the question was "Nowhere." Every credible study has reached that conclusion and that answer was borne out yet again in 2003 and 2004 respectively when the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, and the National Academy of Science both attempted to settle the issue once and for all. The CDC and NAS each set up panels of experts who conducted comprehensive reviews of all of the available research on gun control laws with the objective of identifying which specific strategies were most effective at reducing "gun violence" in crime, suicide, and accidents.

The two groups independently concluded that available data was insufficient to prove that any gun control laws, alone or combined, are effective at reducing criminal misuse of firearms, suicides using firearms, or firearms related injury accidents.
Even though these organizations have track records of gun control advocacy, and the members of the panels were virtually unanimous in their personal support for gun control, they were still unable to locate credible evidence to demonstrate any positive effect from any gun control scheme.

The CDC and NAS panels reviewed over 250 published academic studies, almost 100 books, and nearly 50 government reports all covering some 80 different gun control schemes – from background checks and waiting periods to registration and outright bans on entire classes of firearms – some covering laws dating back 100 years or more. Had the subject of their inquiries been almost anything other than gun control, or the panels had been truly unbiased, the lack of supporting evidence would have been recognized as proof in itself and the panels would have reached the obvious conclusion that gun control laws do not work. That indeed they cannot work because they address tools not behavior or the social circumstances at the roots of that behavior.

If gun control did work there would undoubtedly be enough evidence to allow these experts to reach a conclusion other than "inconclusive." The experts' inability to reach a positive conclusion is even more astounding when it is considered that the majority of the existing data has been generated by researchers who have publicly expressed a personal bias in favor of gun control and who were funded by organizations such as the Joyce and MacArthur foundations, which have gun control as part of their organizational agenda. The CDC and NAS panels' conclusions of "inconclusive" reveal more about the researchers’ own bias than the causes and possible cures of criminal behavior.

One of the most difficult challenges of the gun rights movement is overcoming the emotional, gut reaction that people think of as "common sense." It is easy to assume that more gun control will result in less crime; it seems obvious. But the truth is counter-intuitive. In reality, more guns equal less crime while more restrictions result in higher crime. This is true because reasonable, responsible, law-abiding people remain reasonable, responsible, and law-abiding whether they have a gun or not, but when they do have a gun, they are better able to stop or prevent criminal activity. Criminals and idiots do what criminals and idiots do regardless of laws to the contrary and firearms restrictions merely guarantee them a safer working environment.

The truth is that there is no gun control law that actually works. Gun control laws are wholly ineffective at reducing crime, suicide, or accidents, and they often snare innocents in their complicated red tape. They cost hundreds of millions of dollars in direct and indirect costs to taxpayers leaving fewer resources available for truly effective prevention programs. Advocates of gun control are long on emotion, but short on results. Citizens should demand proof of efficacy before funding or allowing any governmental agency to usurp personal liberties. Not only are gun control laws ineffective, they are counterproductive – not to mention unconstitutional.

Gun control is a crime.

Permission to reprint or post this article in its entirety is hereby granted provided this credit is included.
When your car was new...

 Simple question:
What were you doing when your car was new?

My current family...

1972:
I was a year away from making my earthly debut.

1976:
I was 3 years old. I welcomed my parents' first Monte Carlo to the family, a 1976 model that I "claimed" as "mine" in later years. I was also a year away from my first open heart surgery.

1979:
I welcomed my baby sister to the world.

1981:
I finished first grade in the spring; started second grade in the fall.

1987:
I was in middle school ... and had to say goodbye to my best friend who died of an asthma attack.

Former members...

1988:
I finished middle school and entered the world of High School. I first started thinking about having one of every single YEAR of the Monte Carlo. I later re-thought that ... with the goal of one of each generation, which I completed March 2002.

1997:
I started my first full-time job, after graduating from college a year earlier. I also put my '79 MC Landau (first car) away for the winter and bought a new "daily driver".

2000:
I was one Monte Carlo away from completing the family, having bought the '81 MC SC from my parents December 1999 and the '76 MC Landau a year before that; I've never bought a Monte Carlo brand new. I was still working at the same company, but had switched jobs in late 1999, about the same time I bought the 2000 vehicle. Health wise, I was (unbeknownst to me at the time) 3 years away from my 3rd open heart surgery.

Cort | 36.m.IL | 5 Monte Carlos.1 Caprice Classic | pig valve.pacemaker * 07/24/2010=ChitownMeet #3 *
MCs.CC | models.HO.legos.CHD.RadioShows | RoadTrips.us66 = http://www.chevyasylum.com/cort
"The thing I find most amazing in amazing grace is the chance to give it out" ...
Why we celebrate the 4th

During the 1700s, Philadelphia was an unpleasant place in the summer. Malaria and yellow fever were rampant. There were no cures and no known ways to prevent infection. Most people of means tried to escape the city, if they could.

But in the scorching summer of 1776, scores of our country’s leading men remained behind closed doors in Philadelphia. They were kept there by their work. And what a monumental work it turned out to be.

The 56 leaders, representing all 13 British colonies, signed a declaration that would birth a great nation and illuminate the very future of humankind. It’s this Declaration of Independence that Americans celebrate each July 4.

The document’s first job was to officially announce to the world that all the colonies had decided to declare themselves free and independent states, absolved from any allegiance to Great Britain. That was momentous enough for the years ahead, since in order to make good on that declaration, the colonies would have to defeat the British in a war that stretched until 1783.
But the greater meaning of the Declaration — then as well as now — is as a statement of the conditions that underlie legitimate political authority and as an explanation of the proper ends of government.

The signers proclaimed that political power would spring from the sovereignty of the people, not a crowned hereditary monarch. This idea shook Europe to its very core.

The Declaration appealed not to any conventional law or political contract but to the equal rights possessed by all men and “the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and nature’s God” entitled them.

What is revolutionary about the Declaration of Independence is not that a particular group of Americans declared their independence under particular circumstances. It’s that they did so by appealing to –and promising to base their particular government on — a universal standard of justice.

It is in this sense that Abraham Lincoln praised “the man who, in the concrete pressure of a struggle for national independence by a single people, had the coolness, forecast, and capacity to introduce into a merely revolutionary document, an abstract truth, applicable to all men and all times.”

Of course, it required another war to extend those rights to all Americans, but the fact that they were written down in the Declaration was crucial in 1865, in 1965 and remains so today as well.

“If the American Revolution had produced nothing but the Declaration of Independence,” wrote noted historian Samuel Eliot Morrison, “it would have been worthwhile.”

As Thomas Jefferson, lead author of the Declaration, put it in 1821, “The flames kindled on the 4th of July 1776, have spread over too much of the globe to be extinguished by the feeble engines of despotism; on the contrary, they will consume these engines and all who work them.”

Those flames, the flames of freedom and opportunity, continue to spread. That’s a truth worth celebrating on the Fourth — and all year ’round
GOD LOVES DRUNK PEOPLE TOO!

A man and his wife were awakened at 3:00 am by a loud pounding on the door.

The man gets up and goes to the door where a drunken stranger is standing in
the pouring rain. "Can you give me a push?" the drunks asks him.

"Not a chance," says the husband, "it is 3:00 in the morning!"

He slams the door and returns to bed.

"Who was that?" asked his wife.

"Just some drunk guy asking for a push," he answers.

"Did you help him?" she asks.

"No, I did not, it is 3:00 in the morning and it is pouring rain out there!"

"Well, you have a short memory," says his wife.
Happy and safe 4th of July everyone

This Fourth, This Fifth, and From Here on Out!
...The brutality of that September 11th seems as far removed to many as the Revolutionary War of which we celebrate our declared independence this Fourth of July...
by Cody S. Alderson It is such a community bonding experience to see the flags waving on the Fourth of July. Stepping outside on the special days of summer there are whiffs of barbecue wafting through from a neighbor’s backyard. Children are doing what children do by making up games and enjoying the freedom to indulge in the joys of whatever their imaginations conjure without the fears that too many other children endure.

Though there are some streets in our Great Land that are reminiscent of war torn streets of some faraway places, by and large we remain in peace and safety. The brutality of that September 11th seems as far removed to many as the Revolutionary War of which we celebrate our declared independence this Fourth of July.

Our peace to rest in our beds with both eyes closed snoring while the night breeze rustles the curtains of a partway open window in a neighborhood somewhere within our borders is and has been purchased through the shedding of the blood of individuals much greater than many of us could ever claim to be. There is even peace behind a locked and bolted door in a city apartment somewhere in Our Land as the resident rests with concerns over neighborhood crime, but also is at peace knowing that his government still will not burst in just because they should want to.

Peace is a fragile thing, as fragile as a glass Christmas ornament. It can be suddenly shattered with just a little violence. That is why a quote attributed but not established to George Orwell is still good to be heard where it states, "We sleep soundly in our beds because rough men stand ready in the night to visit violence on those who would do us harm.” The vigilant among us, who are of the ilk to know that being a citizen of these United States is a privilege and not a right, take it a step further to stand ready to visit violence both day and night to those who decide to shatter our earned peace.

There are over nine million law abiding citizens of The United States of America who are recognized by their local governing bodies to have the right to carry a concealed firearm for the purposes of self-defense. Nine million people who go through their day-to-day lives without ever causing or participating in any sort of criminal behavior or acts of violence. Moms, dads, grandmas, grandpas, brothers, sisters, aunts and uncles, cousins and neighbors everywhere who refuse to be passive about the right to be able to effectively defend the self. People who know full well that authorities can only quell the acts of violent criminals after the criminals are known and have already committed their deeds. People who refuse to be THE victim that sets the power of the authorities in motion. People who stand ready to defend self.

There is no need to apologize to anyone when the light of the conscience clicks on, bathing the mind in the harsh light of reality that the first line of defense against a sociopath is the man or woman that we greet daily on the other side of the mirror. The responsibility to provide for one’s needs rests within THE SELF. The responsibility to be a valued member of the community at large is possessed within the self. The responsibility to endure and carry out the roles of faith, family, job and community all rest within the self. Do not let the honor of being in a free land where in forty-eight states there is freedom to carry a concealed weapon, recognized as a right to law-abiding citizens, be something that is not considered another responsibility of the self. Folks, there is a reason that it is called “self-defense.”

On this Fourth of July we should resolve within ourselves to take active steps to prevent our peace from ever being shattered by the willful violence of a sociopath. We can declare a new independence for this Fourth, the fifth, and from here on out.

Whereas I am a law-abiding adult citizen of the United States of America I hereby declare to faithfully exercise and support with my money, mouth, and time the Second Amendment to the Constitution of these United States.

Whereas I am of legal voting age I will study each candidate of every election from borough council to President of the United States, and I will vote for those who uphold my rights as a free citizen and deny my vote to those who do not.

Whereas I am one who enjoys the freedom my ancestors fought for, I too will now fight against all agendas that would curtail my freedom to be permitted to own, posses, and carry firearms for the protection of my self. Of which, by the way, in this whole world there is only one of.

Raise the flag on your land this Sunday whether your land be an apartment balcony or a thousand acre ranch. Celebrate the freedoms we still possess as a free nation and let not apathy settle in your bones when the clock strikes midnight ringing in Monday morning, the fifth of July. Let Monday be the first day that self-education begins on what your local laws are concerning carrying firearms. Find out what stance your elected officials have concerning the Second Amendment. Put that Internet connection to good use. Get hold of a friend who is like minded on making positive change. Join a gun range. Become an NRA or other certified instructor. Take a friend to the gun range. Just DO something positive to promote personal responsibility instead of allowing our personal freedoms to be defaulted to the whims of whoever may seek to abscond with them.

Happy Fourth of July everyone.

Last Thursday I left for the "foothills" to attend a camp for children with cancer.

There were 31 kids (2-15) plus parents, siblings, etc., and it was unbelievable.

Activities were going on all the time. Things for the kids...toys galore (to take home)
and activities for the parents. Massage, nails, pedicure, facial and other acts of TLC.

I was amazed at how well the kids handle their respective disease. From bald to hair grown back it was all there to see.

I wasn't too sure how I would deal with this but I found out I really enjoyed it. Whether it was picking up their plates after a meal, being bitten by one of the "little darlings" or just sweeping the floor, I found it all enjoyable.

It certainly makes one feel happy for their health and gives you a more indepth look at what some parents must cope with on a daily basis.

If you ever get a chance to volunteer for a camp like this I would strongly suggest you do it.

leon

My nephew and fading troubles

It is hard to believe, but my nephew will be 2 years old this November. Watching him grow has been tremendously fun. My favorite story, thus far, happened earlier in June.

I went to my sis/bro-in-law’s place to drop off something for my sister. I parked out front in the street and came in the side door by the driveway. As I opened the door, my nephew yelled, “Cort!” [He hasn't quite mastered "Uncle", it comes out ... "Unc ... Unc ... Unclcor"!]

I heard my sister say, “How’d you know that was Uncle Cort coming in the house?” A bit later, we found out. As we were talking in the front room, my nephew walked to the front window, pointed, and said, “Cahr…Cort cahr.” He was pointing at my Caprice Classic....

Later, right before I left, he started saying “Cap…Cap…Cap…Capri!”, trying to say Caprice for me.

Other "nephew corruption victories" I claim include getting him to say...

..."Dodge", which my sister drives (manual Dakota quad cab)

..."Arlo", which is what I called the Monte Carlo, soon after my parents bought their ("my") 1976 Monte Carlo when I was ~2 years old.

While he hasn't said "Monte", "Carlo" or "Monte Carlo" for me, Dad tells me that he has said "Monte" for him.... For now ... I'm settling for Caprice, since he hasn't seen my Monte Carlos yet...!

3 pics of my nephew....

Driving his truck:

Who...me?

Uncle Cort is so silly!

Sssooo...what melts everything away for you?
South African doctor invents female condom with 'teeth' to fight rape

From the article:

The woman inserts the latex condom like a tampon. Jagged rows of teeth-like hooks line its inside and attach on a man's penis during penetration, Ehlers said.

Once it lodges, only a doctor can remove it -- a procedure Ehlers hopes will be done with authorities on standby to make an arrest.

"It hurts, he cannot pee and walk when it's on," she said. "If he tries to remove it, it will clasp even tighter... however, it doesn't break the skin, and there's no danger of fluid exposure."
