Tim Shaffer wins two nights in a row

ATTICA, Ohio (9-4-10)By Brian Liskai Tim Shaffer put the lights out on the OReilly Auto Parts All Star Circuit of Champions and AtticaRacewayPark Saturday, Sept. 4figuratively and literally.

The Aliquippa, Pa. driver continues to be the hottest sprint car driver in the nation as he recorded his second straight All Star win in as many nights - he won Friday at Lernerville Speedway taking the Baumann Auto Group/WNWO NBC Channel 24 Night Attica Ambush to wrap up the 2010 season at Ohios Finest Racing speedplant.

It wasnt easy for The Steel City Outlaw, as a blown fuse doused the tracks front stretch lights with five laps to go. However, Shaffer would drive his Aaron Call/Janet Holbrook Motorsports machine away from the field on the restart for his 13th All Star victory of 2010. While the win was Shaffers 18th overall for the season, it was his first career All Star victory. Shaffer has won three features this season at Attica and eight over his career at the track.

This is just a blast to drive. Hats off to my guys they just do a great, great job. Its been an awesome month, said Shaffer the Knoxville Nationals champion beside his Technique Roofing, JRC Transportation, J&J Auto Racing, Kistler Engines backed machine. To have a month like weve hadthe wins and the fun the communicationits just been a blast.

When the tracks lights went out with five to go, Shaffer said it reminded him of a race in Tulare, California. I was leading the race then and Ill tell you it gets your attention in a hurry, added Shaffer. When it goes out like that its black.

When the green fell for the 40-lap feature, last weeks Attica victor Lee Jacobs would grab the early lead over track champion Byron Reed, Dale Blaney, Greg Wilson Craig Mintz and Shaffer. Reed, who picked up two All Star wins at Attica in 2010, would drive into the lead exiting turn four on lap 7 while Jacobs battled Blaney and Shaffer for second.

The first caution would fly on lap 9 for a Brandon Wimmer spin with the running order Reed, Jacobs, Blaney, Shaffer, Mintz, Greg Wilson and Cap Henry. A lap later, Sheldon Haudenschild would spin, and Mark Keegan and Brandon Martin would tangle trying to avoid Haudenschild with Martin getting upside down.

On the restart Reed would drive back into a commanding lead with Jacobs in tow while Shaffer would drive around Blaney into third. Reed would hit lapped traffic by lap 15 with Shaffer moving into second with Jacobs, Blaney and Wilson rounding out the top five. It would remain that way until the half-way mark when Blaney would grab third. Shaffer was reeling in Reed and the duo would race side-by-side for two laps until Shaffer would drive to the outside of Reed, utilizing a lapped machine as a pick to take the lead on lap 25 with Blaney, Jacobs and David Gravel rounding out the top five.

On lap 35, the field was bunched up when the front stretch lights went out.
Shaffer had six lapped machines between himself and Reed, with Blaney, Jacobs and Dewease rounding out the top five. Once the lights came back on, Shaffer would put the lights out on the rest of the field. The win is Shaffers 32nd career All Star victory, moving him into a tie with Danny Lasoski for 14th on the series all-time win list.

The win came aboard a car Shaffer is very fond of it carried him to a streak of five consecutive victories during the All Stars Thunder Through the Plains. However, he crashed the car at Husets Speedway, though repairs would net him a win that night.

We bent the car a little so we put a new car together for Knoxville. Brian (Kemenah, crew chief) brought it home and took it to Mark Keegan for repairs. After Knoxville the guys put it back together and its still fast, said Shaffer. This year has been by far the best year and the most fun of my career and Ive been home about every weekend.

For Reed, who scored the only other two All Star victories at Attica in 2010, the second place finish was a great way to end the year.

What can you saythe guys the best in the country right now. I actually did slow down as the race went on, but when he passed me I thought I was still going as good as I was when I thought I was unbeatable. But you have to be perfect to beat those guysI was lucky to finish second, said Reed beside his Reebar Diecasting, Schoenfeld Headers backed machine.

For more information log onto www.allstarsprint.com

Qualifying - Kistler Engines
1. 22-Cole Duncan, 12.07; 2. 83-Tim Shaffer, 12.11; 3. 5R-Byron Reed, 12.16; 4. 89G-David Gravel, 12.18; 5. 2-Dale Blaney, 12.27; 6. 6-Bill Rose, 12.28; 7. 5T-Travis Philo, 12.29; 8. 24H-Lee Jacobs, 12.29; 9.
Well, the Slammer had a quick night.

He had a horrible TT, ran the B and didn't transfer. Don't know what the problem was.

I noticed THE KING'S SITE put the #1 in the A lineup instead of the 14.

Only one "local" made the Dash tonight.

Maybe the Posse does have the best "local" racers.

Time for the feature.

Congrats to Jac Haudenshcild and the #R19 Corning Team on the hard fought win tonight.
Nice run by Jason Sides and the 7S Wetherington Tractor Team who took 2nd from Tim Kaeding with a couple of laps to go
Donny Schatz was "awarded" 3rd, after finishing 4th, behind Tim Kaeding, when TK dropped a muffler in Turn 4 on the last lap! That may be the rule but the punishment sure doesn't fit the crime in this case!

WoO Sprints - Night 1 - Skagit Speedway, Burlington, WA - 35 cars
A-Main Feature Results - 30 laps, 24 cars

1) R19-Jac Haudenschild[2]
2) 7S-Jason Sides[4]
3) 15-Donny Schatz[9]
4) 11-Steve Kinser[6]
5) 6-Danny Lasoski[8]
6) 39C-Jason Solwold[12]
7) 1-Sammy Swindell[18]
8) O-Jonathan Allard[14]
9) 14-Jason Meyers[7]
10) 15H-Sam Hafertepe Jr.[17]
11) 91-Paul McMahan[13]
12) 5W-Lucas Wolfe[21]
13) 11K-Kraig Kinser[22]
14) 7-Craig Dollansky[20]
15) 8R-Travis Jacobson[11]
16) 23-Seth Bergman[16]
17) 9-Joey Saldana[5]
18) 63-Chad Kemenah[19]
19) 2B-Ben Gregg[15]
20) 7K-Shane Stewart[24]
21) 49-Brad Sweet[23]
22) 3-Kerry Madsen[3]
23) 33-Jayme Barnes[10]
24) 83-Tim Kaeding[1]

Results Provided by:
Computer Man Inc.

Fast Time - Kerry Madsen - 11.281 secs
Hard Charger - Sammy Swindell coming from 18th to finish 7th

TK qualified 4th fast, took 2nd in the 4th Heat, started on the pole and lead several laps.
I keep watching the WOO Points Race and it kills me when I see Steve Kinser 1 point behind, or 12 points behind. The guy is 56 years old and still pretty much at the top of the game (maybe not his) and I would just love to see him be the champion at least one more time before he has to throw in the towel. To be so close week in and week out has to be unbelievably frustrating. Good Luck Steve

But then the tires went south and both Kraig and Steve lost tires on the same lap allowing Dollansky to take the lead. Then Dollansky's LR was going down while getting ready for the final restart. But he drove through it for the win.

Joey Saldana won the overall 2 night Magic City Showdown with his win on Fri. and his 4th tonight. Congrats to Joey and the #9 Bud team.

3-day weekend of racing

Are you ready for a 3-day dirt track extravaganza to close out your summer racing fun? Sammy in 4th was the best of them, while Zack Zimmerly had a 10th and Jon Allard a 13th, among others. Jon and the Williams #0A qualified 4th fast and started outside the front row, but apparently encountered a problem along the way.

Full results and stories at Huset's Speedway

Tragic accident at Lawrenceburg Speedway

Finally got to my first race of the year last night. Seems I'm out of state when the races I want to attend are being run. Went to Lawrenceburg to watch the Lawrenceburg Sprints and Modifieds. They also ran the TQ Midgets. They all put on a great show with no big names.
I love the non wing sprint cars. When I first started watching sprint cars, they were all non wings. Then the wings came along and I attended them. Now I've switched back and attend non wing races 6 to 1 over the wings. I love the close racing, the qualifying and most of all the rooster tails they throw. The large mud clots can hurt though. By the time the races are over the stands are usually coated with mud clots. Last night we sat in row 25 in the main grandstands and still got hit. If USAC or the Indiana Sprints had been racing the mud would have slung completely over the grandstands. I love it.
We usually associate tragic accidents with the drivers. And we've had too many as of late. Tragically last night it happened to a spectator. During qualifying it started to rain. Just a passing hard shower but enough to mix with the mud on the stands and walkways to make them slick. Going down the steps turned very slippery. As the rain turned harder people were trying to get to shelter. Some went down the steps, some, like me went up to get under the canopy covering the last 10 rows.
About 20 rows below me an older gentleman, and I say that respectfully since I'm 67, slipped on the steps going down and fell head first the last few rows. His head slammed into the bottom metal fence with his face slamming into the walkway. Tragically he split his head open and did extensive damage to his face. Fortunatedly help was able to get to him shortly but the paramedics in the ambulances had a hard time getting to him. With the track being slick from the rain they had a hard time getting out of the infield. They were finally able to get out of the track on the backstretch and had to go out around the parking lot to get to the grandstands. This took at least 10 minutes. The man lay on the platform for at least 30 minutes before they were able to get him in the ambulance. I pray that he will be all right, but I don't think so. My brother-in-law had gone to the truck to get his jacket and was passing the ambulance when they were loading him. He said he really looked bad and his head was already twice it's size.
We don't expect things like this to happen and realize that life can end in a fleeting moment. Be careful out there.
